"No More Cell Phone Novels:" Jakucho Setouchi Recounts her Experience

Jakucho Setouchi, who tried her hand at writing a cell phone novel for the first time under the penname "Purple," gave an interview to Asahi Newspaper on October 14. In explaining the writing process, she stated, "The cell phone novel is considered a nonliterary form which is destroying the Japanese language. But since this is the only thing being read by young people, I can't ignore the impact of cell phone novels. This is excellent literature. As an advocate of personal experience, I'm not satisfied unless I do something for myself. That's why I decided to try my hand at a cell phone novel."

    COOKING

Karaage Deep Fried Chicken (Tori no Kara-age)

Kara-age ("deep fry"), as its name suggests, is a way of cooking brought from China.
One of the most popular dishes in Japan, it's often used in box lunches, ordered as a pub snack along with beer, or served at children's birthday parties. Kara-age is also one of the most popular items in set menus at restaurants, equally tasty hot or cold.

    INGREDIENTS
    (Serves 4)

    Chicken thighs: 2 pieces

    MARINADE
    Soy sauce: 2 tablespoons
    Sugar: 2 teaspoons
Ginger: small pieces, grated, 2 teaspoons
    Cornstarch: 5 tablespoons
    Cooking oil

    GARNISH (optional)
    Baby tomatoes

How to make Deep Fried Chicken

    1) Cut the chicken into small pieces (2-3 cm cubes).

    2) Put the soy sauce, sugar and ginger in a bowl and stir well.

    3) Place the chicken thighs in the bowl and leave them for approximately one hour.

    4) Heat the oil.

    5) Remove the chicken from the bowl and cover with cornstarch. (Tip: Put the cornstarch in a small plastic bag, add the chicken pieces, and shake the bag well until the chicken is thoroughly covered with cornstarch.)

    6) Place the chicken in the cooking oil and deep fry until golden brown.

    7) Transfer to a plate and serve.
